APA Citation:   Freixanet, Montserrat Goma I. (1999). Personality profile of subjects engaged in high physical risk sports. Human Performance in Extreme Environments. Vol 4(2), Oct 1999, pp. 11-17.

Abstract:
This reprinted article originally appeared in (Personality & Individual Differences, 1991, Vol 12[10], 1087-1093). Investigated the relationship between some personality traits and participation in high physical risk sports using 27 alpinists (mean age 33.4 yrs), 72 mountaineering-related sportsmen (mean age 31.4 yrs), 221 sportsmen (mean age 30.9 yrs), and 54 Ss (mean age 30.7 yrs) not engaged in any risky activity, all of whom were male. Ss were administered the Sensation Seeking Scale (M. Zuckerman et al, 1978), the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, the Impulsiveness Scale of the Impulsiveness-Venturesomeness-Empathy Questionnaire (S. B. G. Eysenck and H. J. Eysenck, 1978), the Socialization Scale of the California Psychological Inventory, the Susceptibility to Punishment Scale, and the experimental version of the Susceptibility to Reward Scale. In examining the results it is asserted that there exists a personality profile of Ss engaged in high physical risk normative activities who share the following characteristics: extraversion, emotional stability, conformity to social norms, and seeking thrill and experience by socialized means.
