Abstract:
Identified the relationship between individual (experience, skills, level, locus of control, and involvement) and setting (naturalness, social orientation, equipment, and risk) variables commonly associated with the adventure recreation experience, using 257 white-water boaters and 329 rock climbers. Canonical correlation analyses generally supported a linear relationship between the 2 sets of attributes. Within both samples, the 1st canonical function supported the model, with individual attributes covarying in the same direction and magnitude as setting attributes. The 2nd canonical function suggested a 2nd cohort of participants who follow similar patterns of skill development and self-sufficiency but have lower levels of involvement in the activity.
